The 2020 edition of the Maunakea Coin Contest opens January 13, 2020!

The Maunakea Coin Contest is open to all K-12 students of the Big Island, including homeschooled students.

Students are invited to create a design for the 2020 coin, with elements of culture, astronomy (such as night sky, constellations, and telescopes), and nature (such as plants, animals, insects) found on or around Maunakea. Contestants enter in one of three grade categories. Nine category winners and the best overall 3 entries will receive generous prizes from KTA, the Maunakea Observatories, Imiloa Astronomy Center, and other partners.

The top winner will see his or her design struck on a coin. A bronze version of the coin will be available for sale, and aluminum coins will be distributed at outreach events in the coming year. The 2020 design will also be used as the 2021 Astro Day logo!

The flyer has all the main details of the contest. The detailed rules are also available.

Students can download, print, and fill the design sheet, which then needs to be turned in at one of the KTA stores before March 6, before the store closes.

Students can get information about Maunakea by consulting the Maunakea Heritage and Natural Resources guide from the Office of Maunakea  Management, also available for downloading at
