design by Kain Kamalani Kawailima

The 2013 Mauna Kea Coin is designed by Kain Kamalani Kawailima, 12th grader at Ke Ana La‘ahana Public Charter School as the grand prize winner.

His design depicts Mauna Kea and its telescopes, with Mauna Loa behind it. In the sky we see the Sun, Moon, stars, and sea-faring birds. He etched stylized representations of Hawai‘i within the Sun: the woven lauhala (pandanus leaves), the three ti leaves, the konane (Hawaiian checker board game), and canoe paddles for the rays of the Sun.

The 2013 bronze coin will be sold at First Light Book Store of Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station (VIS) and its First Light E-Store.

The contest award ceremony will be held at AstroDay's center stage in the Prince Kuhio Plaza shopping mall, Hilo, on Saturday, May 4th, 2013 from 10:20 am (just after the opening ceremony) to 10:50 am. All winners including the category winners and the special award winners, their families and teachers are invited to the ceremony.

The 2013 Mauna Kea Coin (aluminum coin) will be distributed at AstroDay. Anyone who collects all astronomy stamps from obsevatory stations on a "passport" can get a free aluminum coin at the Mauna Kea Coin Contest booth.
