The winners of the 2020 Edition of the Maunakea Coin Contest  were announced on social media and on YouTube!

 

 The Grand Winner of the 2020 Maunakea Coin Contest is Shell Visser, from Waimea Middle school!

The Maunakea Coin Contest was open to all K-12 students of the Big Island, including homeschooled students.

Students were invited to create a design for the 2020 coin, with elements of culture, astronomy (such as night sky, constellations, and telescopes), and nature (such as plants, animals, insects) found on or around Maunakea. Contestants entered in one of three grade categories. Nine category winners and the best overall 3 entries have received generous prizes from KTA, the Maunakea Observatories, Imiloa Astronomy Center, and other partners.

The top winner will see his or her design struck on a coin. A bronze version of the coin will be available for sale, and aluminum coins will be distributed at outreach events in the coming year.
